Tasks

Progress in each of the work package's tasks are reported in this section, with regular updates, indicated by the dates. To view the original description of work of each task, as it is written in the project's description of work, you can click on the table header cells. Only the last update of the next steps is displayed.

T5.1 Organising at national RIs a series of staff and users training events (SOLEIL)
Task: The purpose of this task is to promote the outcomes of the catalogues and services provided by ExPaNDS for EOSC by organising a series of events.
• Task 5.1.1 Workshop(s) to promote FAIR principles. This would cover the benefits of Open Data, data lifecycle, collecting metadata for Photon and Neutron RIs, tools for storing and archiving data, data publishing, DOIs and Data Citation. (M12)
• Task 5.1.2 Workshop(s) to develop common rules and best practices between national RI’s which build on previous work (e.g. PaNdata) and harmonise the provision of the EOSC services. (M12)
• Task 5.1.3 Workshop/meeting(s) to educate and train developers and facility staff on how to deploy and support their own workflows enabling a long term viability and sustainability of the data analysis services. This activity will be organized and performed in close collaboration with WP3 and WP4. (M25)
• Task 5.1.4 Workshop to educate and train metadata catalogue services within data management and data life cycle management including Photon and Neutron Ontologies developed in WP3 (M34)
• Task 5.1.5 Workshop/meeting(s) to educate and train Photon and Neutron users in the use of the data analysis services. This activity will be organized and performed in close collaboration with WP4 (M35)
A total of 6 workshops will be organised by ExPaNDS partners and associates, as event providers. The dedicated budget will include all usual cost related to the organisation (room rental, catering for meals, and travel expenses for the lecturers, ...). Depending on the location of the workshop at the different RIs, there will be a level of recharge between partners in the delivery of these activities.
Progress: 15 Jun 2021:
Two workshops to promote the FAIR principles to PaN facility staff and users were organised with WP2 and took place in October 2020. The event and associated material (recordings) are registered in the PaN training platform. The workshop included contributions from FAIRsFAIR and PaNOSC.
Two workshops on EOSC were also organised with WP1 and took place in April 2021. The workshop included contributions from B2FIND, OpenAIRE, the EOSC Synergy project as well as PaNOSC. The event and associated material (wiki) are also published in the platform here.
Next steps: 18 Feb 2022: Three additional series of workshops will be organised during the final year of the project. The next topics will be focused on WP3 and WP4 developments and will ensure a maximum take-up of the project's results.
T5.2 Evaluation of available e-platforms and provision of a training demonstrator (HZDR)
Task: The purpose of this task is to contact the e-platforms providers (ESRF for PaNOSC and EGI for EOSC-hub) to define together the prerequisites to maximise and expand the use of the platforms as appropriate. WP2, WP3 and WP4 will work closely with WP5 and WP6 to deliver tailored specification for each of the online trainings.
The output will be a definition of the most suitable training materials in accordance with the requirements and recommendations made by the targeted e-platform providers.
A demonstrator for using e-learning platforms will be developed and provided (D5.2).
Progress: 15 Jun 2021:
A training task force was established to discuss the training portal infrastructure and coordination with PaNOSC WP8. The e-learning platform was refurbished as a result of the task force. HZDR participated to the train the trainers workshop series organised by PaNOSC in February and March 2021 along with other ExPaNDS facilities representatives.
The alignment with EOSC platforms is discussed in the INFRA-EOSC-5 task force on training where WP5 participates. We notably decided to re-use ELIXIR's training portal TeSS to complement PaNOSC's e-learning platform with a low-barrier mechanism to reference PaN training material. A PaN instance of TeSS was already implemented by HZDR and is now in production.
18 Feb 2022:
The combination of the PaN e-learning platform developed by PaNOSC with the PaN training catalogue developed by WP5 from TeSS was chosen for our PaN training service which is now regrouped under the same landing page: pan-training.eu. The evaluation of available platforms and reasons for this choice are presented in the associated deliverable. A video was also released to guide users in the use of the platform.
The training service is since then continuously enhanced with features like the automatic harvesting of LEAPS and Laserlab-Europe events and PaN e-learning courses. The PaNET ontology from WP3 was integrated to help the user pre-fill the “scientific topics” metadata field.
The workflow feature offered by pan-training.eu was used to present the TELBE data analysis workflow at the 2nd PaN EOSC symposium.
Next steps: 18 Feb 2022: Next step will be to implement UmbrellaID as a log-in option for content providers. Work on standardised metadata for training material will continue to be developed.
T5.3 Collection, Preparation and Publishing of Training Material (SOLEIL)
Task: The purpose of this task is to provide the training materials to foster the uptake of ExPaNDS services in the existing e-learning platforms. WP5 will support the collection of the material provided by the technical work packages WP2, WP3 and WP4 and prepare and publish the training material. This will ensure training material, such as Moodles, Wikimedias, modules and so on is disseminated in a consistent form:
• FAIR data guidelines, common rules and best practices for the Photon and Neutron community (Task 2.6, WP2);
• Standard dataset definition (WP3) and Photon and Neutron reference data sets (WP4);
• Long term viability and sustainability of the data analysis services developed by ExPaNDS (Task 4.5, WP4);
• etc.
This task will be strongly correlated to the actions related to the development of WP2, WP3 and WP4.
Progress: 15 Jun 2021:
First training material was developed along with the two workshops (see task 5.1). The main training material is being defined with the technical work packages.
18 Feb 2022:
Following a recommendation we received at the mid-term review, the initial outlines for training material creation were refined and gathered in a training plan. The training plan was shared with WP leaders.
The training catalogue now contains more than 110 materials, among which 22 are provided by ExPaNDS itself. There are also 5 workflows.
Next steps: 18 Feb 2022: Additional material will be produced and published in the last year of the project, notably:
- guidance notes for WP2 outputs (as it was done for the data policy framework),
- workflows for the 5 data analysis prototypes that will be made available in EOSC,
- supporting material for the upcoming workshops.
T5.4 Monitoring and Measuring of training effectiveness (HZDR)
Task: In connection with the various workshops and training activities WP5 will gather user feedback in the form of surveys and usage statistics. This task will be performed closely together with WP2, WP3, WP4 and WP6. The outcome will be collated, analysed and presented in the form of a final report.
Progress: 15 Jun 2021:
Preliminary results from the surveys performed after the two ExPaNDS workshops were presented to the project and will be included in the next annual report for WP5.
18 Feb 2022:
All ExPaNDS-related KPIs for training can now be monitored, including the number of unique visitors to the training catalogue (see associated issue).
Next steps: 18 Feb 2022: The KPIs and the lessons learned from the post-workshops surveys will be described in the final deliverable for WP5 (D5.6).
